Week of June 19th

Steel Drum, African and Brazilian Drumming and Carnival Art

Date: Monday, June 19th – Friday, June 23rd
Time: 8:30am-3:30pm
Grade: 3rd-8th graders

Cost: $500/week

A week of Steel Drum, African and Brazilian drumming combined with Carnival Art classes and fun sports activities. Participants will learn Trinidadian, Brazilian and West African Music on authentic instruments from a group of nationally renowned teachers. Students will focus on the steel drum, the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago as well as Djembe and Dun Dun drums from Guinea, West Africa and a variety of Samba drums and bells from Brazil.

Daily classes and rehearsals will culminate in a Friday afternoon performance showcasing the music learned during the week. In addition, students will have a daily art class focusing on carnival art-making t-shirts, banners, posters and flags for their band to use in the final concert. Daily fun sports activities will also be included. Enrollment is open to students grades 3-8, beginning to experienced levels.

The fee includes use of all instruments and art supplies.

Summer at Athena Academy is proud to offer a week long skills program for dyslexic students entering grades 1 – 8. This program is specifically designed, utilizing Athena Academy’s unique teaching approach, to help dyslexic students build foundational skills for learning.

Our highly trained, dedicated teachers will work with the students on understanding the way their brain’s work and through multi-sensory, skills based instruction teach them to use their visual-spatial strengths when learning. The incorporation of our project based curriculum will engage the students with meaningful and fun content that will allow them to apply the skills being taught.

This program is a great way to minimize summer learning loss and boost student learning.

Sports and Fitness (and fun) Camp

Date: Monday, June 26th – Friday, June 30th
Time: 8:30am-3:00pm - Pick up by 3:30pm
Grade: 2nd-4th graders

Cost: $375/week

Sports and Fitness Camp will focus on developmental skills. We will address multi-step instructions, eye-hand coordination, throwing, catching, balance and fitness. Each day will involve cardio, games and various sports.  Kids will learn new skills and make great new friends in this fun supportive environment.

Coach Trevor is a PE teacher during the school year and has 15 years experience coaching and refereeing basketball and baseball. He has a tremendous rapport with kids, his enthusiasm for sport and structured physical activity is infectious.

Expressive Arts

Date: Monday, June 26th – Friday, June 30th
Time: 8:30am-3:00pm - Pick up by 3:30pm
Grade: 1st-5th graders

Cost: $375/week

Expressive Arts is a multi-media learning and experiential process for students to use drawing, painting, sculpture, movement, poetry, and music. In addition to exposing students to new or more in depth techniques with familiar mediums, experimentation in combining mediums is supported.

Students will learn how to talk about their work, learn to appreciate and respond to classmates’ work, using the emotional intelligence model. Skills in communication and self-awareness create a platform for students to share, take creative risks with success that translate to all learning processes.

Please have students wear clothing that can get messy because art making can be a messy and very fun business!

Our instructor Jean has a life long practice of using the arts for well being and celebration of the creative experience.  She is an art teacher during the school year.

Animator’s Stop Motion Workshop

Date: Monday, June 26th – Friday, June 30th
Time: 9:00am-3:00pm - Pick up by 3:30pm
Grade: 3rd-8th graders

Cost: $375/week

Collaborate with other students to create stop motion animated shorts while exploring different mediums – marker boards, paper, clay, objects, and people (pixilation).

Learn how to use story boarding, set building and puppet making to help you achieve your creative vision.

Our instructor, Sumie is a full-time teacher during the school year. She brings her creativity and gift of storytelling to life through stop motion animation.

Camp Code

Date: Monday, July 10th – Friday, July 14th
Time: 9:00am-3:00pm - Pick up by 3:30pm
Grade: 2nd - 6th graders

Cost: $375/week

At Camp Code, children will use Scratch, Kodable, Osmo Coding, Blockly, Makey Makey, and Dash and Dot robots to explore computer programming. Campers will be given the freedom to explore all the coding resources or they may choose to spend time perfecting their skills with one particular program.

Either way, you can bet they will enjoy creating their own coding masterpieces! Camp Code is for all levels - from beginners to professional programmers and everyone in between.

Our instructor Taylor has a Master's degree from Harvard University and is passionate about all things technology. She is a full-time teacher during the school year and being our resident millennial, teaches us all how to use technology!

Theatre Make-up and Mask Making

Cost: $375/week

Students will use professional grade materials for prosthetic make up, learn painting techniques for face painting, from the scary to the beautiful and sublime. Mask making with either pre made paper mache', and/or plaster cast of face will be offered. Many ideas for embellishments will be explored.

Messy friendly clothing is recommended!
